Google’s New Logo shows the value of fonts

September 4, 2015 by Eric Ritter

Google's New Logo

It was only a matter of time before Google got a new logo.  As we all know, the world hates change. But, if you look at the internet in particular, it looks like no place hates it more.

I, love Google’s new logo. There are some very thoughtful and clever elements in there. Among those modern (digital) design elements that I appreciate most are Flat Design and a clean sans-serif font.

And yes, it grows on you over time. [Read more…] about Google’s New Logo shows the value of fonts

Nailed it: Apple MacBook vs. Google Chromebook Pixel Comparison

March 20, 2015 by Eric Ritter

The Onion really hit the nail on its head with this Apple MacBook vs. Google Chromebook Pixel comparison:

Last week, Apple announced the “new” Apple MacBook and due to it’s lack of featured many have compared it to netbooks such as the Google Chromebook Pixel.

Only time will tell how successful the new MacBook will be, but if Apple’s track record is any guidance we will soon see plenty of new MacBook lookalikes on the market lacking everything people are now complaining about: One port, no disk drive, etc.

Along with the cool google search timeline above google made semantic search official on its 15th birthday.

In celebration of its 15th birthday, google put up a must read blog post with many interesting announcements: “Fifteen years on—and we’re just getting started” – among them (if you read between the lines) the official unveiling of semantic search. this of course took me down the road of what this means for the bigger picture of search: [Read more…] about The future of search is here: Google makes semantic search official

what is google author rank – how to get the most out of it.

January 16, 2013 by Eric Ritter

what is google author rank
what is google author rank?

google’s author rank goes back to a patent filed 2005. the patent describes a method in which the contents of the the search results (SERP) are assigned to a specific authors. in addition, authors will be assessed based on their previous activities and designated a score that will be used to rank  future content they publish on the web..

this score is calculated using many different factors. some examples are the number of followers the author has on google+ or how often their posts have been shared. ultimately, the goal with author rank is to bring a social component into a google search – a human factor is added to the pure google algorithm.

google maps are back on the iphone.

December 14, 2012 by Eric Ritter

google maps app back on iphone.
google maps app back on iphone.

what do i think of the new google maps app for iphone?

in a nutshell: it’s great. even though i’ve only been using it since yesterday morning it’s totally worth it for the superior place search functionality powered by google alone.

based on my pro apple bias it seems like a lot of folks expected me to take a crap on the app, however i’m not going to do that (surprise, surprise). as i’ve always said, my only requirement to use something is that it is the best – highest quality, easiest to use, etc. and with the google maps app for the iphone that is clearly the case.

let’s make one thing clear: google maps is superior to apple maps in most ways (but not 100% on the iphone). i must however say that i am looking forward to apple stepping up in maps now that tim cook admitted the failed launch on the apple website and in a recent interview with brian williams he  shared that apple “screwed up” (see below and excuse the obnoxious ad).
